Mix and Match: Rules For Bridal Party Style

by Mia Bolaris-Forget (Staff Writer)Traditionally speaking the number of ladies in the bridal party were equal to the amount of gentlemen on the guys side with each lady being escorted, well, by her assigned escort. And, sometimes, it just worked out that the two were actually a twosome.
But, the rules HAVE changed. And, it’s no longer necessary or tradition to pair together couples (though it is nice), have only guys on the guys side or gals on the gal’s side, nor are numbers really that important anymore. In fact, many ladies are fine walking down the aisle all by themselves, with another friend, or one on each arm of their assigned gentleman.
Today, bucking tradition is the new set of “rules”. And, that includes the tried and true rules of wedding party attire. Guys can breath easy knowing the no longer have to sport a bright pink bow tie or sash. In fact, matching the maids is more passé than popular.
Today’s groomsmen are instead expected to choose something that will compliment their lady, but they don’t have to match her completely.
Also, it’s always been customary for the groom and the best man to dress similarly, sporting colours that tend to stand out, so they are easily identifiable and their positions are obvious to guests.
The best way to make is “bold” statement is by colour and style. Experts suggest that suiting the groomsmen in one style of jacket (complimentary to the bridesmaid dresses) while the groom and his best man wear another type of jacket, the best man matching the maid of honour and the groom matching the bride.
If however you decide on one colour, consider choosing a variation in ties, vests and/or jackets for the groomsmen, the groom and the best man. Depending on your type of even you can choose variations in casual, semi-formal and formal tuxes. And, don’t hesitate to ask which would best compliment the bride and her maids, as well as what’s comfortable and best suited for each of the men.
